Well, it’s official.
The 12-team College Football Playoff is set. And naturally, there’s a lot of talk about what was right (and wrong) about the final rankings.
Here are four things I think the committee nailed, and two things they totally whiffed on.
What they got right:
- The top four seeds. Indiana, Ohio State, Georgia and Texas Tech are undoubtedly the top four teams, the committee’s rankings reflected that.
- Tulane and JMU. For all the talk about G5 schools being undeserving, it was nice to see both of these conference winners end up in the playoff.
- Miami over Notre Dame. The Canes won head to head. Enough said.
- No love for Texas. Despite hard lobbying from Sarkisian, the Longhorns were left out of the playoff, something they didn’t deserve to be in, anyways.

What the College Football Playoff Committee got wrong:
- Alabama as the no. 9 seed. There’s no way in hell a 3-loss team who got smacked in the SEC championship should be ranked that highly.
- BYU as the second team out, instead of the first. BYU’s resume and the fact that they played in the conference championship game should have given them a leg up on Notre Dame (who’s already chosen to opt out of a bowl game).
